Weekend Getaway to Bass Lake, California: A beautiful escape you did not know you needed

Tucked away in the Sierra foothills, just a short drive from Yosemite, Bass Lake is one of those rare places that makes you wonder how it’s stayed off everyone’s radar. Most people head straight for Yosemite—and while it’s iconic for a reason, that’s exactly why this little lake town remains so peaceful, so quaint, and so perfect for a quiet weekend escape.
We visited in late April, and honestly? It felt like stepping into a postcard. Mountain and lake views stretched out in every direction, soft rain misted the treetops, and fog drifted through the hills like something out of the Pacific Northwest. At one point, it even snowed for a couple of hours—yes, snow in April! It was pure magic.
I keep asking myself: why does everyone always flock to Tahoe when places like this exist? If you’re craving a summer getaway that’s beautiful and under-the-radar, maybe this is your sign to skip Tahoe and head to Bass Lake instead.

When to visit
☀️ Summer (June–August)
This is the most popular time to visit—and for good reason. Warm weather makes it ideal for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, and even fishing. The lake buzzes with activity, but it still feels more laid-back than more crowded destinations.
🍂 Fall (September–November)
As the temperatures cool, the crowds thin out and the area takes on a cozy, moody vibe. Fall colors start to creep in, and crisp air makes it perfect for scenic hikes or slow mornings by the lake with a hot drink.

❄️ Winter (December–February)
In winter, Bass Lake transforms into a peaceful, snow-dusted wonderland. It’s quiet, calm, and the perfect place for a reflective reset. If you’re lucky, you might catch snow flurries covering the pines and trails—like something out of a fairytale.
🌸 Spring (March–May)
This might just be the most underrated time to visit. Wildflowers bloom along the trails, waterfalls are flowing, and the weather is pleasantly cool. Best of all? You’ll have most of it to yourself before the summer crowds roll in.
Where to stay
Bass Lake has no shortage of cozy places to call home for the weekend whether you’re looking for a lakeside cabin, a charming Airbnb, or a full-service resort—but one spot I have to recommend is the Yosemite Pink Cottage.
This charming Airbnb is the kind of place designed to help you fully unwind. It’s peaceful, perfectly located, and thoughtfully decorated—every corner of it felt intentional and calming. We were so obsessed, we spent our first full day just hanging out at the cottage before even heading out to explore.
Waking up to mountain and lake views from the bedroom and wellness deck felt surreal. The spa setup—complete with a hot tub and a sauna facing the view—quickly became our morning and evening ritual. Inside, the decor was warm, playful, and cozy, like living in a tiny, well-designed dollhouse. The kitchen and grill setup made it super easy to cook our own meals (grilled tacos were a favorite), and we loved that we could walk straight to Bass Lake from the front door. We even stumbled onto a quiet little trail for a peaceful lakeside walk.
If you’re planning a trip soon, I’d recommend booking early—this spot is still a hidden gem, but probably not for long.
2 Day Weekend Itinerary
Day 1 – Waterfalls, Woods & Lakeside Wandering
8am-12noon: Start your morning slow at the cottage—make breakfast, sip your coffee, and just take in the views from the deck. Honestly, it’s hard to leave when you’re waking up to mountains, a lake, and that crisp mountain air. But once you’re ready, get your hiking shoes on and head out to explore one of my favorite waterfall trails in the area: the Lewis Creek National Scenic Trail to Corlieu Falls and Red Rock Falls. Here’s the trail on AllTrails.

This trail is such a gem, especially in spring and early summer when the waterfalls are roaring and everything is so fresh and green. It honestly gave me major Pacific Northwest vibes. Along the way, you’ll find little coves by the creek that are perfect for taking a break, having a snack, or just soaking in the peaceful sounds of the forest. And Corlieu Falls? Wow. It’s one of the most beautiful waterfall views I’ve seen—can’t believe it’s still such a hidden spot.
12noon-2:30pm: After the hike, head into Oakhurst or back to Bass Lake for lunch. Ducey’s on the Lake is a great pick if you want a bite with a view. In the afternoon, take a slow drive around Bass Lake and stop at a few scenic spots along the way.
2:30pm-3:30pm: One of our favorite stops was the Little Denver Church Picnic Site. There’s a little trail that winds along the lake, with benches where you can sit and just watch the fog drift over the water. We went twice—once while it was snowing (magical!), and again after the snow cleared. Both times felt straight out of a storybook.

3:30pm-6:30pm: Next, check out the Way of the Mono Trail—a short and easy loop that leads to an amazing lookout over the lake. Then drive to the Crane Valley Dam at one end of Bass Lake. We parked and walked across it for the views, and it was so worth it.
6:30pm-9:30pm: After a full day, head back to the cottage, change into your coziest clothes, and wind down with a soak in the hot tub or a little time in the sauna. For dinner, you can cook something simple at the cottage (grilled tacos, anyone?), or head to South Gate Brewing Company in Oakhurst for a laid-back meal. If you’re celebrating or in the mood for something fancy, check out The Elderberry House or The Cellar for a special night out.

Day 2 – Coffee, more Waterfalls & Slow Moments by the Lake
9am-10am: Start your day the cozy way—with coffee at Nurture, a super cute local café in Bass Lake. Their seasonal menu always has fun surprises. When we visited, they had a Butterfly Pea matcha (yes, it was as dreamy as it sounds!) that tasted amazing. We also tried the caprese avocado toast and loved it—it’s the perfect fuel for a morning adventure.
10am-12:30pm: From there, head out on the Willow Creek Trail, which starts just minutes away. It’s such a beautiful trail that follows the creek and leads all the way to Angel Falls. If you’re like me and can’t get enough of waterfalls and forest magic, you’ll love this one. The sounds of the creek, little pools of water along the way, and all that greenery—it’s such a peaceful hike with just enough adventure. Here’s the link to the alltrails map.

12:30pm-5pm: After your hike, grab lunch in the area or head back to the cottage for something homemade. Then, take it slow for the rest of the afternoon. One of our favorite spots to relax was Falls Beach. It’s a little picnic area that locals love—and it’s easy to see why. There’s a small waterfall that flows right into the lake, and the views are beautiful. We just spread out a blanket, kicked back, and soaked it all in.
5pm-9pm: End your day back at the cottage with a cozy dinner. Light a few candles, maybe pour a glass of wine, and have a little candlelit meal out on the deck with the lake in the background. The perfect ending to a weekend full of fresh air, quiet moments, and underrated adventures.

Other things to do (Aka What’s on Our Bucket List for Next Time!)
Even though we packed a lot into our trip, there are still a few things we didn’t get to that are definitely staying on our list for next time.
Rent a Boat on Bass Lake
If you’re visiting in the warmer months, renting a boat is a must. Bass Lake has several rental shops (like Miller’s Landing and Bass Lake Boat Rentals) where you can grab a pontoon, kayak, paddleboard, or even a jet ski. The lake is calm, the views are gorgeous, and honestly—what’s better than a sunny afternoon on the water?
Day Trip to Yosemite
Since Yosemite National Park is just a short drive away, it’s super tempting to squeeze in a visit—even if you’ve already been (like us!). Next time, we’re thinking of going back to explore more of Mariposa Grove, which is home to some of the most stunning giant sequoias, or just doing a relaxed drive through Yosemite Valley to soak in those views again. It’s close enough to make a day trip easy, especially if you’re craving a little national park magic.

Swimming Holes in the Summer
We’ve heard Angel Falls (at the end of Willow Creek Trail) becomes a favorite local swimming spot when the weather heats up—and now it’s on our summer bucket list! There are also little pools along the creeks we hiked (like on Lewis Creek Trail) that look perfect for cooling off on a hot day. Just make sure to check the flow and be safe around the water!
Tips for First time visitors
If it’s your first time heading to Bass Lake, here are a few little things to make your trip smooth and stress-free.
EV Charging
Bass Lake doesn’t currently have EV charging stations, but the nearby town of Oakhurst (just 10 minutes away) does! We charged up right before heading into Bass Lake on the day we arrived and didn’t need to top up again until we were leaving. So, if you’re driving electric, plan a quick stop in Oakhurst and you’re all set.

Planning a Yosemite Visit? Check Permit Info
If you’re thinking of popping into Yosemite during your trip, make sure to check for seasonal entry reservation requirements or permits. The rules change depending on time of year, especially in spring and summer.
Cell Reception is Spotty (and That’s Kind of the Point)
Don’t expect full bars while exploring—cell service in Bass Lake is pretty limited, and there were long stretches where we had no signal. Honestly? We kind of loved it. It gave us the perfect excuse to unplug, slow down, and just be present. The cottage had good wifi, so we could always catch up once we were back at the cottage if needed.
Pack for Changing Weather
Mountain weather has a mind of its own, especially during spring and fall. We experienced fog, rain, and even some snow—all in the same weekend! Make sure to check the forecast before your trip and pack layers so you’re ready for whatever nature throws your way.

Bass Lake completely surprised us—in the best way. Tucked away just a few hours from the Bay Area and often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Yosemite, this little mountain town feels like one of California’s best-kept secrets. Whether you’re soaking in lake views from a cozy cottage, chasing waterfalls on quiet forest trails, or simply slowing down with a book and a blanket by the water, this place has a way of helping you truly unplug.
So if you’ve been craving a peaceful weekend escape filled with nature, comfort, and that “where has this been all my life?” feeling—Bass Lake might just be the answer. Bookmark this for your next trip, and don’t be surprised if you end up planning your return before you even leave.
